Algae can be divided into two types, single cell and string algae. Single cell algae cause the water to turn green. In the worst cases, the color of the water resembles pea soup. Single cell algae will form when excess nutrients, sunlight, and water are present. They are so small that they will pass through filters and filter media.

Methods to prevent single cell algae:

• The combination of aquatic plants and beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria will convert ammonia from excess food, fish waste, and decomposing debris into nitrites. Then nitrites will be oxidized into nitrates. Aquatic plants use nitrates as a food source. Aquatic plants should cover 1/3 to 1/2 of the surface area.

• Reduce the amount of food given to koi. Koi should only be fed the amount of food they can consume in 5 minutes.

String/filamentous algae often appears in clear pond water, attached to rock in ponds, streams, and waterfalls. Blanketweed is another form of string algae that rises to the surface of a pond during the heat of the day and sinks when the water cools.

• Perform a spring pond cleanout to remove organic debris
