Filtration is an important aspect of water gardening and koi keeping. Proper filtration will keep your pond crystal clear so you can enjoy your koi and will keep your plants and fish healthy. Contact an expert here at Avant Garden Pond Supply and we will help you size and design your pond filtration.

There are four types of pond filtration:

• mechanical

• biological

• photological

• chemical

Mechanical filtration is accomplished when water is pumped through filter material to remove suspended debris. Filter material are typically located skimmers and filtered waterfalls. Another form of mechanical filtration is a pump pre-filter. These filter pads will need to be cleaned periodically to allow unrestricted flow of pond water. Please browse our selection of skimmers, filtered waterfalls, pump pre-filters and filter media.

Biological filtration relies heavily on beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria colonizes on hard surfaces and the water is pumped through and around the area. The bacteria helps break down ammonia and nitrites to less harmful nitrate (see Nitrogen Cycle on our Water Treatments page). Nitrates are then used by aquatic plants as a food source. Media used to colonize beneficial bacteria can be bio-balls, ribbons, foam mats and plastic mats that are placed in a waterfall box or a canister filter. At Avant Garden Pond Supply, we have a great selection of bio-media. Can't find a canister filter to meet your specific needs? Contact us for a custom canister filter estimate.

Chemical filtration utilizes phosphate binders, zeolite, or activated carbon to remove or bind impurities. In some cases, ozone ionizers are used for oxidation & the "cleansing" process. Browse our selection of algaecides, activated carbon, zeolite, and ozone ionizers.

Photological filtration uses UV light to directly damage organisms for easier collection. UV clarifiers use lower wattage for every GPH flow and UV Sterilizers use higher wattage for every GPH flow. Here at Avant Garden Pond Supply, we have a great selection of UV Clarifiers and UV Sterilizers. For more information visit our UV Clarifiers/Sterilizers page.
