Disappearing, vanishing, pond-free, and pond-less are four adjectives used to describe a waterfall that ends in a hidden reservoir. Disappearing waterfalls are an easy way to achieve the tranquil sounds of a waterfall crashing into a pond, and because there is no standing water at the base it requires much less maintenance and is safer for children.
WATER VOLUME IN A STREAM
Width x Length x .33 x 7.5 = Gallons in stream
WATER VOLUME IN A WATERFALL
Width x Length x Height of falls x .33 x 7.5 = Gallons in waterfall
SIZING WATERFALL RESERVOIR
Reservoir should hold 2-3 times the amount of water in stream and waterfall.
ALGAE IN A DISAPPEARING WATERFALL
You may experience string algae with your disappearing waterfall. Using an algaecide will solve your string algae in a disappearing waterfall. However, we recommend creating a balanced eco-system.
As you plan your next disappearing waterfall, you should consider the Nitrogen Cycle as if you were building a pond. Using beneficial bacteria and aquatic plants will create a non-toxic environment. Plant 3-6 marginal plants for every 10' of stream. For more information on the Nitrogen Cycle, visit our Water Treatments page.
Here at Avant Garden Pond Supply, we have products that will simplify the job of constructing a disappearing waterfall. Basin matrix allow your water-feature to hold a greater volume of water and the pump vaults simplify accessing your pump. Most pump vaults are capable of housing fill valves. Fill valves are an easy way to control the water level in disappearing waterfall reservoirs. The fill valve utilizes a float to open the valve and tap into your irrigation system, allowing it to replenish your reservoir's water to a sufficient level. Please Browse our pump vaults, basin matrix, fill valves and auto fill kits for your next pond-free waterfall and stream projects.
